Candidacy Announcement
Candidate Statement for Glenn Freeman, State Auditor
With the incumbent in office since 1993, it’s time for a fresh set of eyes to examine how government fulfills its duties to serve the public. The office of Auditor especially is one where there should be no risk of long incumbency leading to “comfort zones” in the office itself or agencies examined. This is especially the case in partisan elections.
As your Auditor, I will work to make the office non-partisan. As it stands, there is always the potential for doubt or suspicion when the very government agencies or programs the Auditor is examining were put in place by the Auditor’s own party. Until that change can come about, I will bring no bias, politics, or special interests to the position, just an ability to be a truly independent Auditor.
Performance audits are very effective if they are searching and thorough. To accomplish this I would put failure markers in place. If an audit showed that a failure marker (threshold) had been reached, then a recommendation of abolishment of an entire program would not be out of the question. I believe taxpayers deserve nothing less.
It’s time for new ideas and fresh eyes on government.
Sincerely yours,
Glenn Freeman
